Ingrown Toenails

A common condition which can be painful and leave the body open to infection.

Usually this occurs when a piece of your own toenail pierces the skin at the side of the nail causing a wound. The skin often reacts to having something embedded within in it and an overgrowth of hypergranulation tissue is often produce with the area becoming inflamed and swollen . An infection can get into the wound causing pus to be produced and if left unchecked the infection can spread.

An ingrowing toenail can often be managed conservatively in the clinic with the offended nail cut back and the wound cared for until it heals. However if this is not possible you may require a minor surgical procedure (nail surgery) which can usually be scheduled and performed within the clinic.

Should there be significant infection or spreading infection then you may need to see your GP for some antibiotics.
